REFLECTION ON EDUCATIONAL PROVISION FOR MIGRANT FISHER FOLK IN NIGERIA: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS

Abstract

The paper examined educational provision for migrant folk in Nigeria. As such concepts and sub-themes such as nomads, nomadic education, Migrant fisher folk, overview of educational provision for Migrant fisher folk in Nigeria, educational needs of Migrant fisher folk and challenges in educating them formed the sub-headings raised and discussed in the paper. On the basis of the discussion, the paper while acknowledging the progress made by the National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE) in providing education for Migrant Fisher folk through the National Nomadic Education programme, however observed some challenges hindering implementation of the programme such as Inadequate relevant teaching materials and Lack of enough qualified and suitable teachers among others. It was also part of the paper’s observation that over the years Nomadic educational programmes for the Migrant fisher folk children has been available only in the southern part of the country. On this basis, the paper therefore suggested as part of the prospect for the education of migrant fisher folk and their children that, proactive measures should be taken by the stakeholders to address the challenges in order to improve educational delivery for migrant fisher folk and their children in Nigeria. Also, in Nomadic Education delivery more especially for Migrant fisher folk and their children, more emphasis should be given to carrying along other communities of Migrant fisher folk in different parts of Nigeria.
