A TENDENCY IN TORO VASSAL STATE AND A DISTRICT AREA IN THE 20TH CENTURY: PHASE OF COLONIALISM IN BAUCHI EMIRATE

Abstract

Colonialism characterized and promoted specific biasness that it introduced to the colonized communities. This was to preserved relative order for continuance of the colonial project on the exploitation of people and their resources. In Bauchi province which Toro District belonged; the story was not different as the British introduced the indirect rule system to administer the land under it. This paper seeks to unravel the nature of the impacts of British rule on the pattern of relations in Toro District in the 20th century. It examines changes in interpersonal and inter-communal relations through the various colonial policies of divide and rule, taxation and boundaries re-organisations. Secondly, it also shed light on the transformation in the pattern of relations amongst hitherto rulers on one hand and between the native authority rulers and the colonialist on the other. The research used the historical methodology by collecting primary and secondary sources i.e. oral and written sources in particular were evaluated and interpreted in constructing the history of the impact of colonialism on patterns of relation, in Toro District.
